What Things Do You Need in Your Next Toothbrush?

Posted on 3/30/2020 by City Smiles DC
What Things Do You Need in Your Next Toothbrush?Think about it. When was the last time you tossed your old toothbrush and picked up a new one? Take a look at yours now and what do you see? Crushed bristles, wet and soggy bristles, missing bristles, bent handle (when was the last time you washed it off even)?

Do yourself a favor, toss the brush and go shopping for a new one, better yet, set an alarm on your smart phone to remind you to replace the toothbrush at least every 2-3 months. There are really two ways to choose – what does our staff and the ADA recommend, and what feels good for your own mouth.

What We Recommend
There are, of course, the standard go-to recommendations from your dental care professionals. Such as always go with a soft bristled brush. It has long been recommended that they are better for your teeth and your gums. You certainly have other choices such as medium and stiff bristles, but go with the recommendation that we provide.

Get a round bristled toothbrush, which translates to save you some time into meaning the ends of the bristles have 'end-rounded' that way you are sure to avoid hurting any sensitive gum tissue; and last but not least, look for the ADA seal. To be honest, there are only a handful of toothbrushes out there that are allowed to have the ADA seal. This simply ensures that your toothbrush is safe and will withstand regular use.

Other choices you should make for your brush are truly your own choice are things such as size, plus handle and bristle shape. Just ensure that the toothbrush fits in your mouth comfortably so that you can reach each tooth (front, back and molars as well). As to the handle and the bristle shape – that really should be up to you. Oh, and the color, no recommendations on the color either!

If you would like to schedule an appointment for your regular checkup or give us a call for some ADA recommended toothbrushes, please give us a call and we will get you scheduled in and give you our best brush advice.
