In the modern age when self-image is very important to us, it’s no wonder that teeth whitening is one of the most common procedures here at City Smiles DC.
Tooth whitening is a popular method of improving the natural color of your teeth, without the need to remove anything from the tooth surface. Although you cannot expect a complete color change, you will notice a great improvement in the shade of your teeth.
Are you the right candidate?
Many different patients come to our clinic for teeth whitening. Although most of the people are happy with their teeth up to a certain point, they start noticing yellowing and stains after some time. Teeth can get discolored with age, but also because of our eating and drinking habits. Tea, red wine, coffee, and other dark drinks are a common reason for teeth staining. Those who smoke are also more prone to teeth discoloration.
Some people also deal with staining under the surface of their teeth, caused by small cracks and even some antibiotics.
We usually use the process known as professional bleaching. Before we go on with the treatment, we will first make an initial checkup to see if the procedure is right for you. If we decide to go on with the treatment, we will put a gel or a rubber shield on your gums to keep them safe from the bleach. After that, we will apply the bleaching agent to your teeth, with the help of a tray that fits your teeth like a mouthguard. The ingredient responsible for the whitening is either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, depending on the case. After this active ingredient breaks down, the oxygen penetrates the teeth affecting its color and making it lighter.
The treatment is usually done within one month. At the first appointment, we will take impressions of your teeth to make the tray. Once we have begun the treatment, you may need to continue to apply the whitening product at home. This depends on the case, but you will get all the information on your first assessment.
After the treatment
The effects of the teeth whitening procedure usually last from two to three years, but this can significantly vary in different cases. If you smoke or regularly eat or drink staining food, then the effect will probably not last as long. To get the most accurate assessment, we will talk about your habits before we start the treatment.
Regarding the side effects, some of our patients have reported that their teeth are more sensitive to cold after the treatment while some of them also felt discomfort in the gums. These side effects usually last only a few days. If the symptoms continue for a longer time, make sure to contact our clinic so you can get appropriate treatment.
